Purpose/Goal:

  • Develop a process for gathering ideas from neighbors and community members about possible uses for the Larrabee facility after it closes as a K-5 in June 2014.
  • Develop criteria for evaluating the pros/cons of the ideas submitted.
  • Weigh the pros/cons of potential repurposing ideas.
  • Share pros/cons with the superintendent.
  • Receive information from staff and give feedback on a maintenance and security plan for Larrabee’s facility until it can be repurposed.
Basis for Establishment:
  • As part of a 10-year plan developed by the Facilities Planning Task Force, Larrabee Elementary School will be retired as a K-5 elementary school in June 2014. Bellingham Public Schools wants to engage neighbors and community members in brainstorming ideas and giving feedback about how the facility might be repurposed.
Decision-Making Process:
  • Advisory to the superintendent. The superintendent will use the Think Tank’s input to work with district staff and make a decision about how Larrabee will be repurposed.
Plan of Work:
  • Call for Think Tank applications in October through Nov. 1.
  • Begin meeting in November to December to establish group norms and a process for gathering ideas/proposals from neighbors and community members about possible uses for the Larrabee facility after it closes as a K-5 in June 2014.
  • Establish criteria for evaluating the pros/cons of the ideas submitted.
  • Weigh the pros/cons of potential repurposing ideas.
  • January-February: Share pros/cons with the superintendent.
