Q: What is the new Fitness and Nutrition policy?

A: The new fitness and nutrition policy adopted by the Bellingham School Board on Sept. 1 creates healthy vending in middle and high schools, aligns health and fitness instructional time and curriculum with state law, and encourages finding alternatives to food for rewarding students.

Meals For Achievement
Good nutrition contributes positively to a student’s learning ability, behavior and general well being. The National School Breakfast and Lunch programs are available in all Bellingham schools each school day. Meals are nutritionally balanced with a variety of foods from the food pyramid. Menus are planned by a School Foodservice and Nutrition Specialist and menus, highlighting a variety of daily food choices, are available at each school.


Food Services Catering Division will provide catering, at reasonable rates, to schools for a variety of events. Here are some of the options and information you will find useful in letting us make your special event a success!

For families meeting Federal income guidelines, meals at school can be obtained for little or no cost.  Applications are available at each school office.

Food Services is now able to offer families the ability to download Free & Reduced lunch applications along with the letter of instruction in Adobe Acrobat format.

Food Services is a non-profit business.  Over 70 food service professionals take pride in serving approximately 5,000 customers daily in 23 schools and special centers.  Lunch and breakfast is available at all Public School sites.

Q: What are the school meals programs?

 

A: The school breakfast and school lunch programs offer nutritious meals for students in public and private nonprofit schools across the country. During the 2004-05 school year, the Bellingham School District served more than 1 million meals to students.

 

The Bellingham School District Board of Directors adopted Nutrition and Physical Fitness policy 3440 on Sept. 1, 2005.

 


The Bellingham School District participates in the National School Lunch, School Breakfast, After School Snack and Commodity Distribution program operated under the jurisdiction of the United States Department of Agriculture and Washington State.

CHANGES TO FOOD STAMP PROGRAM AFFECT FREE SCHOOL LUNCH ELIGILITY

     The Bellingham School District has teamed up with the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) to help distribute some exciting information to families in the district.

Food Services employs more than 75 professionals dedicated to providing excellence in all phases of child nutrition program operations. School meals, planned by a School Food Service and Nutrition Specialist, reflect the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and student preferences. Low cost, nutritious meals are served to more than 6,000 customers every day through breakfasts and lunches offered in all Bellingham Public Schools.
