Five community members make up the Bellingham School District's Board of Directors. Registered voters elect Board members for terms of four years. The School Board has governance responsibilities in these main four areas: vision, accountability, structure and advocacy. The School Board believes that effective public school education must be directed toward common needs of all children, but must also consider the unique differences and needs of individual children.

The Superintendent is responsible for the administration of the schools under applicable laws, policies of the Board and the authority vested in the position. The Superintendent is hired by, and is directly responsible to, the Board of Directors.

It is the Superintendent’s responsibility to provide effective leadership for the school district and secure the best educational opportunities for children. He is responsible for fulfilling the mission of the schools—improving student learning.
