Birchwood Elementary School Update

The new Birchwood Elementary School is scheduled to reopen in fall 2014. Birchwood students, families, staff, neighbors and the general public are invited to join a groundbreaking ceremony at the Birchwood site, 3200 Pinewood Avenue, at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, June 13.

Construction will begin in mid-June. On May 21, five general contractors bid on building the new Birchwood Elementary School and the lowest responsible bid was submitted by Colacurcio Brothers Construction, a long-time Whatcom County construction company that has been in business for 27 years. Colacurcio built the new Shuksan Middle school in 2008 and has experience in many other school projects including work for the Lake Stevens, Sedro Woolley and Mount Vernon school districts.

The new Birchwood will be slightly larger than the former school and provides spaces for a comprehensive preK-5 educational program. The design incorporates modern features including classrooms grouped in pods to enhance collaboration, small group team spaces, technology, an energy-efficient heating and ventilation system. It also includes a combination of community-valued traditional elements such as a brick exterior, reusing the historic flag pole and recreating the original 1928 exterior entrance as the entrance to the new library.
