Lead Attorney in McCleary vs. State Lawsuit Coming to Bellingham

A Message from Communications and Community Relations

Bellingham Public Schools invites staff, families and the community to a presentation featuring Tom Ahearne, the lead attorney in the McCleary v. State of Washington legal case.

Please join us 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3 at the Bellingham High School Performing Arts Center to hear Mr. Ahearne speak about the history and outcomes of the McCleary case, and his thoughts about the future of public education funding.

Back in 2012, the Washington Supreme Court (1) affirmed that Washington children have a constitutional right to a public education that is amply funded by the State, (2) ruled that our State government is violating this constitutional right, and (3) ordered the Legislature to be amply funding the State’s K-12 public schools by no later than September 1, 2018.  State lawmakers are in session now wrestling with ways to comply with this McCleary ruling before they send the State’s 2017-19 Budget to the Governor to sign.

Mr. Ahearne is an engaging, passionate speaker and will be taking questions following his presentation.

We hope to see you there!
