Snow Make-Up Days

With a priority of making up lost quality instruction time due to the snow day closures on Dec. 12 and 13, Bellingham Public Schools will make up the days at the end of the school year with an early dismissal on Monday, June 19. In addition, we will be pushing the semester break back from Jan. 25 to Jan. 27. This means Jan. 25 will be a regular school day and Jan. 27 will be a no school day/teacher work day.

Please take note of the following dates for 2017:

·         Wednesday, Jan. 25: Regular school day

·         Friday, Jan. 27: Semester Break (no school for all schools)

·         Monday, June 19: Last day of school (early dismissal for all schools)

According to the Bellingham Education Association’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, the first two missed days due to inclement weather will be made up at the end of the school year. Our labor associations and district leaders will work together to discuss options if more snow days occur in 2017.

State law requires that children attend school 180 days. Children must be present for a certain number of hours each day for it to count as a school day. When school is delayed, children are in attendance the hours needed to meet state requirements. When school is closed, missed days must be made up unless they are waived by the state. State law does not currently allow school districts to add minutes onto each school day to make up missed time.

We recognize the importance of having children in school on a regular schedule with quality, uninterrupted learning time. With safety as our primary concern, decisions that impact student learning are always weighed with careful consideration. Please be patient during weather situations as we share in the frustration regarding schedule changes.
