Watch What’s Up Doc, Blog About the Bond’s Financial Impact

A Message from Superintendent Greg Baker

Dear Students, Families and Community Members,

Election day is less than a week away.

I have been meeting with all of our schools’ staff, PTAs, a number of neighborhood associations and many other community organizations over the last two months, and there is a lot of excitement about the bond and our commitment to provide every child a safe, healthy and functional school.

One of the most common questions I receive is about the financial impact. With past levies and bonds, it’s been easier to explain to voters what will happen with their property tax rate.  Due to the state’s new funding model, it has become a more complicated story to tell.  I just published a blog to help explain why our local school tax rates will not go up with this bond but why state property tax rates may increase based on what legislators are doing in Olympia.  You can also can read the Bellingham Herald’s article about the bond that was published today.

I also want to encourage you to watch our latest edition of “What’s Up Doc?”, which is a fun video feature where students interview me about a topic of interest.

This edition features three high school students who attended Alderwood, Parkview and Sunnyland elementary schools.

As always, if you have wonders or reflections about the bond, feel free to comment on the blog or email or call me. The blog is a helpful tool because others may have similar questions and would appreciate seeing the responses.  Just remember our ground rules: comments that are personally directed, inappropriate or anonymous will not be posted.

You can also peruse this webpage dedicated to bond facts.

Remember to vote by Feb. 13.

Thank you and have a great day!
