Health Course Challenge: Introduction

Department Owner:

Health is a required course for graduation, designed to examine the connections between physical, mental, and social health, and their impact on student lives. In this course, students reflect on lifestyle choices that they have made and how these choices may affect their lives.

Much of the course is devoted to current health issues, especially those facing high school and post-secondary students. Course modules include:

  • Non-Communicable Diseases
  • Safe Living and Emergency Response
  • Positive Body Image & Nutrition
  • Mental Health, Social Health
  • Substance Use and Abuse
  • Consumer Health
  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Pregnancy
  • Prenatal and Childbirth
  • Sexually Transmitted Diseases
  • Healthy Relationship
  • Sexual Harassment
  • Teen Pregnancy Issues

Abstinence. Because we value previous experiences and skills that students bring to this content, activities in the Health classes build on and extend student learning. The course includes class discussion, performance-based and demonstration of student proficiency in each of the skill modules. Mastery of the content, skills, and concepts are a graduation requirement.

The Health Course can be challenged by completion of all required performance tasks as well as a successful score on the Comprehensive Health Written Examination. Students who review the Health Course modules and tasks, and believe they have already mastered all of the competencies, are invited to participate in a waiver process.

Students who wish to challenge the Health class will:

  • Attend the informational meeting with the health teacher to go over the timeline for completing the demonstration of the waiver requirements and for taking the written examination before the end of the current school year.
  • Meet with the counselor at one of the high schools to discuss requirements of the Health Waiver Process.
  • Fill out and return the “Health Challenge Registration Form” with student and parent signatures to the School Counselor by June 3rd.
  • Achieve a satisfactory score on the Comprehensive Health Written Examination.
  • Successfully complete a series of performance tasks according to the current school year timeline.
