The largest of seven school districts in Whatcom County, Bellingham serves more than 10,000 students. The District covers 97 square miles and has 73,000 residents. Students attend schools based on neighborhood boundaries. Elementary schools serve children in grades kindergarten through five; middle schools serve students in grades six through eight; and high schools serve students in grades nine through twelve. As enrollment fluctuates and family living patterns shift, school boundaries are adjusted periodically to balance enrollments.

Parents/guardians may request that their child attend another school in the district through the regular transfer process outlined in Policy and Procedure 3131/3131P: Student Attendance Area Transfers.
