Questioning
What do you need to know to solve the problem or make the decision?

How can we plan ahead to protect life and property if Mt. Baker erupts?

In order to answer this question, we will need to answer some smaller questions.

These are questions your class will answer.

  • What are the different types of volcanoes?
  • What type of volcano is Mt. Baker?

These are questions your safety team will answer.

  • What are the hazards that have occurred during the eruptions of similar volcanoes?
  • What causes each hazard?
  • How does this hazard affect people, plants, animals and property?
  • How are these hazards likely to affect the citizens of Bellingham, Washington?

The first two questions will be answered as your whole class works through some background activities. (Teachers, see Teacher Tips for more information on these activities.)

Your research will help you answer the last four questions. You will then decide which hazard is most likely to affect the citizens of Bellingham, and you will develop a plan to protect life and property if Mt. Baker erupts.
