Next Monday, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who exemplified many of the values within Bellingham Public Schools’ strategic plan, The Bellingham Promise. He spoke of compassion, how service builds community and that diversity enhances a strong and healthy society. Dr. King also taught us that all children should be loved.

Dr. King was also a warrior – an equity warrior. He did all he could to ensure fair and equitable opportunities for every person, every child. One of the school district’s key strategies in The Promise is our ‘one schoolhouse approach,’ which ensures that we strive to provide an equitable distribution of resources and services for all. One example of this is Project Free Education, which focuses on reducing school supply fees and other costs for students and families. It’s a work in progress, and our staff is working to uncover all associated costs to families.

Please join me in taking a moment during this important day to reflect on Dr. King’s words and actions.

I am grateful for the courage he had to make our world a better place.
