2022 Facilities Bond Facts for Jan. 18, watch video

Dear staff, families and community members,

As many of you know, voters will decide on a bond this February regarding facilities for Bellingham Public Schools.

A facilities planning task force helped identify our highest priority needs this fall, which influenced what is included in this bond. Watch for regular emails that include information related to the bond over the coming weeks; these facts are for you to consider, digest and share as you see fit.

You can also visit this webpage for more information and other videos. Bond fact sheets are coming home with elementary students as well.

Two areas of investment in the 2022 facilities bond include:

  • A new elementary school: The bond includes funds to design and build a 15th elementary school on district-owned King Mountain property on the northside of town where growth is occurring. This space would be a significant step in developing a higher sustainability standard for our schools and initially used as a temporary swing space for students as other schools are rebuilt. (See next bullet.)
  • Carl Cozier, Columbia and Roosevelt redesigns: We will begin the design for the replacement of Carl Cozier, Columbia and Roosevelt elementary schools and set the stage for a future bond to fund their construction. These schools are in need of replacement due to their age and condition, as well as concerns related to accessibility and sustainability.

Watch this video to learn more about our plans to build a 15th elementary school and start redesign plans for Carl Cozier, Columbia and Roosevelt.

These are just some of the projects funded by the proposed bond. Please get more details about other planned projects and financial implications on our website or check out our progress on facilities projects built from past bonds. I have been stopping by many staff and PTA and parent group meetings over the last few months and weeks sharing district updates, including information about the bond, and answering questions. If you missed it, you can watch my presentation on the bond.

Let me know if you have questions about the bond or any of our capital projects. Ballots will be mailed later this week.

Thank you and remember to vote in February!
