A Message from Superintendent Greg Baker
Dear Families and Community,
Earlier this month, I shared that we have been monitoring growth in housing and student enrollment fluctuations in north Bellingham. This article provides an excellent summary.
I also shared that we would begin a process for the future adjustment of some of our school attendance areas. We are now forming a standing committee to tackle these issues and asking those who are interested to serve a two-year term. This will help address our most pressing needs in north Bellingham and other issues as they arise.
Anyone from any school community may apply, and we are looking specifically for parents and high school students. If you’re interested but can’t make this commitment, please know that if you are part of a school community that is affected by school attendance area adjustments, the process will include an opportunity to express your opinion and give feedback before decisions are made. We do not have pre-conceived plans for adjustments; this process will be transparent and engaging. Therefore, we do not know which schools’ attendance areas will be adjusted, how they will be adjusted or when; this will be part of the committee process and recommendations. While this creates some uncertainty, it is part of an authentic process that will be guided by The Bellingham Promise. As always, we are committed to doing right by our students, families, staff and community.
Call for Applications for Attendance Areas PreK-12 Standing Committee by Dec. 12
Students, families and staff are encouraged to apply by 8 a.m. Monday, Dec. 12 for consideration to serve on the Attendance Areas PreK-12 Standing Committee.
The purpose of the group is to:
- Analyze data regarding short-term and long-term housing development, capacity at our schools, and develop recommendations for short-term (2017-18 and 2018-19) attendance area adjustments and long-term adjustments (2019 and beyond).
- Use criteria from policy 3130 to develop and evaluate possible scenarios.
- Use input from families and staff to form recommendation(s) to the superintendent.
- Use recommendations from the next Facilities Planning Task Force to inform future long-term attendance adjustments.
Members will need to be available for weekly meetings from 3-5 p.m. on Jan. 5, 12, 19, 26 and Feb. 2, 9 and 16. The group will continue to meet monthly, as needed, for longer-term considerations. Members are asked to commit to a two-year term of service.
