Community Review Night for Social Emotional Learning Curriculum and Middle School Science Adoption

A Message from the Department of Teaching and Learning

Bellingham Public Schools invites you to a community review of social emotional learning (SEL) curriculum for preschool through grade 8 and of middle school science curriculum for grades 6 to 8. We value the involvement of our staff, families and community members and look forward to sharing information on these materials and hearing your feedback.

The in-person review session will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 3 in the Board Room of the District Office, located at 1306 Dupont Street. Additionally, materials for both SEL and middle school science will be on display at the District Office through May 11 for review and input.

Online review of these materials is also available. See below for specific links to the material and feedback method. The online surveys will be open through May 11.

Both the in-person and online reviews are an opportunity for an exchange of questions and answers, and a chance to give verbal and written feedback.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Curriculum
A team of staff, parents and community members has been working to review social and emotional learning curriculum for our preschool through grade 8 students. After a thorough review, the Social and Emotional Learning Curriculum Advisory Group is making a recommendation for the Caring School Community curriculum for kindergarten through grade 5 and the RULER curriculum for our middle schools (grades 6 to 8). This community review is the final step before an official recommendation is made to the superintendent.

There are two ways to give feedback on the advisory group’s recommendation:

In Person — 5:30 to 7 p.m. May 3 in the District Office Board Room.  There will be a short presentation on the recommended SEL curricula with an opportunity before and after for review of the materials and feedback; or

Online — Visit the SEL Curriculum Advisory webpage for information regarding our process and links to information on the recommended materials. Click here to take the feedback survey. The survey will be open through May 11.

Middle School Science Adoption
Staff, parents and community members have also been working this year to review science curriculum for our middle school students (grades 6-8) to align our instruction to the Washington State Learning Standards for Science. For more information about these state standards, click here.

After a thorough review, the Middle School Science Adoption Committee is recommending the Amplify Science curriculum for our middle schools. This community review is the final step before an official recommendation is made to the superintendent.

There are two ways to give feedback on the committee’s recommendation:
