Investing in early childhood and following the class of 2024

A Message from Superintendent Greg Baker

Dear staff, students, families and community,

I wanted to share a video with you that touches on both the importance of early childhood and the challenges of being an adolescent during COVID. We’ve been following the class of 2024 over the last 10 years because they were the first class to access full day kindergarten. This school year, they began a high school experience unlike any other class in recent history.

We were able to connect with some of them this school year to hear about their experience. Turns out there are not a lot of parallels between kindergarten and remote learning at the high school level, but they are making friends and shared their excitement to return to in-person school. I’m particularly interested by what outcomes of The Bellingham Promise speak to them as high schoolers compared to when they were in kindergarten.

We can all take some inspiration from their resilience, and I believe the foundation provided by full-day kindergarten and other early learning supports is helping them through this time. As a key strategy in The Promise, we believe that early childhood education has a long term return for our students and community.

Please watch this video of the class of 2024 students including footage of them viewing footage of their kindergarten selves, their perspective on the challenges of remote learning and reflections on their first days of in-person learning.

Greg Baker

p.s. we are still registering students for fall, including kindergartners!
