A Message from Sehome Principal Sonia Cole
Dear Sehome families,
As many of you are aware, we have been working closely with our football team and school and district leadership as we investigated serious, confirmed student behaviors. Last Friday’s football game was cancelled after we learned of behavior that violated harassment, intimidation and bullying policies and our athletic code of conduct.
This week, we are working with the football program to address the issues we discovered, beginning with meetings and practices held Monday. The team is preparing for games as scheduled under the leadership of Coach Beason.
Our district, school, coaches and team take this very seriously. Our focus in working with the team is on providing support for players who need it and on rebuilding positive team culture.
I would like to ask for your help. There are some people in our community spreading a number of sensational rumors that are untrue and unhelpful. If you have questions, please talk to me. I can’t share a lot due to student privacy laws, but name-calling and jumping to conclusions are not in alignment with our Sehome Core Covenants. I ask for your trust that my staff and I are working through a difficult situation with care and integrity.
We want to remind all students and families of our anonymous safety reporting and tip line, and we strongly encourage any student who believes they have been the victim of harassment, intimidation or bullying, or who is aware of it having occurred, to report it to the principal or another trusted staff member.
Our school and district leadership team are committed to supporting our football program as they move forward, as we would any group of students who needed support to move forward, learn and do better. Our staff will continue to treat all students with dignity and privacy. Unfortunately, even with our communication out around these events, rumors and attention may continue. If any students are targeted themselves, they also are protected from harassment, intimidation and bullying (HIB) and can speak with a trusted adult or submit information to the anonymous tip line.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
