Squalicum Leadership Update

A Message from Superintendent Greg Baker

Dear Squalicum Families,

I have two leadership announcements to share with you today.

We announced to Squalicum staff this afternoon that our next principal of Squalicum High School School is Miguel Perez.

Miguel is an experienced educator and administrator with strong ties to Whatcom County. After growing up here, Miguel earned his bachelor’s degree from Western Washington University and his master’s degree in education from the University of Hawaii-Manoa.  Miguel taught English Language Arts at a high school in Hawaii before returning to the Pacific Northwest where he served as a teacher, coach, athletic director and then school administrator in the Federal Way and Puyallup school districts.  This last year, he was an educational officer with the Hawaii Department of Education in Waikiki.

Miguel, along with his 8-year old daughter, has extended family here in Whatcom County and both are thrilled to come back home to Bellingham and Whatcom County.

Miguel brings with him a strong focus on high expectations and equitable outcomes for all students. He values authentic engagement with students, staff and families, and he is known as a skilled and caring communicator and collaborator. Miguel has a diverse background in education, including experience with 1:1 technology, Advanced Placement (AP), AVID, special education and Career and Technical Education (CTE).

I’d like to thank the interview teams which consisted of parents, students and staff.  It was a thorough process that also included gathering input from Squalicum families and staff about their desired characteristics in a new principal.

The second announcement is that Squalicum Assistant Principal HkwauaQueJol “Q” Hollins has accepted a principal position at a high school in Renton. Q has been at Squalicum since 2013 and has done amazing work on behalf of students and staff for the past five years. We wish him well with his future endeavors. We will announce a new assistant principal for Squalicum this spring.

Please join me in welcoming Miguel Perez to Squalicum and wishing Q Hollins all the best in his next adventure!
