The Fierce Urgency of Now: MLK Human Rights Conference tomorrow for staff and families

A Message from Superintendent Greg Baker

Dear staff, students and families,

One more email to round out the week!

I wanted to take a moment to invite you to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Human Rights Conference from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 18 at Whatcom Community College. This is an annual conference that honors Martin Luther King, Jr. and is hosted by our partners at the Whatcom Human Rights Task Force. This year’s theme is Tomorrow is Today — The Fierce Urgency of Now, citing the notable call to action by the Reverend King in many of his speeches.

Our work in Bellingham Public Schools and in our strategic plan The Bellingham Promise connects well to the Saturday conference. Our core beliefs that all children should be loved, learning is lifelong and essential to a high quality of life, and diversity enhances a strong and healthy community will be evident throughout the day. We also recognize that the MLK, Jr. holiday is always an opportunity to promote civic action. This conference provides us a place to come together to advance our key strategy of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Many district staff members will be attending as well as some of our students who will be highlighting their work and their call to action.

For information about the conference, go to mlkconference.org.

Looking forward to see you all in school next week!

Greg Baker
